Disability Community — We need your stories for the City of San José Budget Season
It is budget season for local governments. Last year, the City of San José heard the complaints from disability advocates and started a process to hopefully improve the situation. After a handful of community sessions and the internal evaluation process, the City of San José is proposing another partial solution to the problems that the disability community encounter.
We need your help. Please share your stories by answering one of the following questions by June 16, 2022 if you are able to share before the budget is approved. We will continue to collect and share stories with the city even after this date. You can also share your stories via this Google Form: https://forms.gle/Js9Qzcb6vH9C6K1dA. Creative story options include a typed or hand-written statement, a video clip, a selfie with a note or statement on it, a poem, and so on. If you need assistance in recording your statement, please email allthingsdisabilitymichele@gmail.com and we can schedule a Zoom meeting to record what you have to say.
- Share an experience that shows an example of ableism in your interactions with the city of San Jose.
- What is one thing you want the city manager to know about your experience as a disabled person and a better way for the city to address the barrier?
- What are your thoughts on how well the city of San Jose addresses the needs of disabled people?
- Is there anything you want to share about your experiences that you have never had the opportunity to share?
Once collected, these stories will be added to my YouTube playlist, shared on social media, and with the City of San Jose. The full set of stories will be added to Michele Mashburn’s Medium page also as a central resource for others to access.
